Staggering prize money up for grabs at the 2024 Boston Marathon

Excitement has started to build up ahead of the 2024 Boston Marathon scheduled to take place on Monday, April 15 in the United States.

Several Kenyan marathoners including defending champions Hellen Obiri and Evans Chebet are expected to fight for the mouth-watering prize money in this year’s edition.

According to the organizers of the Abbott World Marathon Majors’ Road race, a total of $1.2 million will be awarded to the competitors, with the top finishers in the elite races set to pocket a big chunk of that money.

The winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will walk home with $150,000 (approximately Ksh 19,507,500) each.

Meanwhile, those who settle for second and third-place positions in the competitive race will be awarded $75,000 (approximately Ksh 9,753,750) and $40,000 (5,202,000) respectively. The money is however subject to the tax procedure and other deductions.

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) President Jack Fleming and board chairman Cheri Blauwet has described the upcoming road race as one of the best ever.

“For 128 years, athletes have come to Boston to challenge themselves and push the limits. Hundreds of miles have been run in training, all in anticipation of the 26.2-mile-long celebration that is the Boston Marathon.

Savor the experience from start to finish and revel in the community support. It truly is unmatched,” their joint statement read.

Apart from Chebet, who will be seeking to win the title for a third consecutive time, some of the other star runners who are set to light up the streets of the American city include John Korir, Ronald Korir, Cyprian Kotut and Albert Korir.

Tanzania’s Gerald Gabriel Geay and the reigning Valencia Marathon champion Sisay Lemma will also be in contention.

In the women’s category, pre-race favorite Hellen Obiri will compete against the likes of Ethiopian runners Worknesh Degefa, Zeineba Yimer and Ababel Yeshaneh.

The Kenyan trio of Mary Ngugi, Vibian Chepkirui and the ever-green Edna Kiplagat are also expected to feature in the race.
